Use the Power of the Press to Broadcast the Benefits


Oprah Winfrey, other talk show hosts and news personalities enormously impact public opinion and behavior. If you are looking for the most potent way to positively influence decision makers, taxpayers, voters and the public at large; then you, too, must take advantage of "Publicity Power." Your agency has solutions, good news and wonderful stories that could and should be shared with the world. Turn park and recreation benefits into a complete publicity plan and strategy. This workshop is critical whether you love or fear the media or are tired of seeing and hearing only "bad news" on television, radio, newspapers and magazines.. No writing skills required.
Needs Identification: The mission of the Benefits Movement is to increase public perception. Nothing is our society is more powerful in terms of affecting perception and credibility than the media Yet, few park and recreation agencies have designated publicists. Many park and recreation agencies have been victims of negative publicity. Every agency, no matter what size, must learn how to use the power of the media to meet their goals and improve public perception.

Learning Objectives:
  • Write a Benefits Based Publicity Plan for their agency.
  • Learn tips to build solid relationships with local and national journalists, editors and program directors.
  • Understand how to compile a media list to meet specific agency needs.
  • Write and format news releases that get printed and aired, not lost or thrown away.
  • Explore the best ways to communicate with press contacts - mail, fax or e mail.
  • Get the press to call them for "good news and feature stories."

    Session Format and Learner Assessment: Interactive lecture combined by small group activities Learners will demonstrate new skills by developing publicity strategies for use in their own agency. They will also outline a news release for submission to the media.
